Computed Tomography is a medical imaging method. CT imaging uses special X-ray to produce multiple images of the inside of the body. Cardiac CT scan is a non-invasive scan to obtain information about the location and extent of calcified plaque in the coronary arteries. The vessels that supply oxygen containing blood to the heart wall. Plaque is a build up of fat and other substances, including calcium, which overtime narrows the arteries or even closes off blood supply to the heart.
Calcium is a marker of coronary artery disease, the amount of calcium detected on a cardiac CT is a helpful diagnostic tool. The objective of a cardiac CT is to detect coronary artery disease (CAD) at an early stage when there are no symptoms and to determine its severity.
The Procedure is most often recommended for men aged 45 years or older and women who are 55 years or who are pre menopausal. Some patients choose to have the test on their own in order to detect early staged CAD.
