Our History

ICON is one of the oldest, most innovative and most respected radiology groups in the greater Portland metropolitan area. The group was established at Good Samaritan Hospital shortly after the conclusion of World War II by doctors Dick Reins and Fred Shipps. Dr. Reins was active in radiology nationally, serving as vice president of the American Society of Radiology. Dr. Shipps was a gifted innovator and inventor and held over a dozen patents. Dr. Shipps many contributions to radiology included the design and construction of one of the first mechanical injectors for angiography contrast, the Shipps Injector.

Following the spirit of innovation and expertise established by these founders, ICON (previously known as Radiology Consultants until the late 1990s and most recently Diagnostic Imaging Northwest) has consistently been on the forefront of medical imaging and interventional radiology. The group has served patients at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital, a tertiary care teaching hospital in the heart of NW Portland, Oregon, for over half a century. Recently, the group has expanded to serve patients at Legacy Mt Hood Medical Center in Gresham, Oregon.
